ASO basics: how people find your app on Google Play

Building the app is half the work. App Store Optimisation helps the right people find it, and it starts with your store listing.

INSTALL

Millions of apps compete for attention on Google Play. App Store Optimisation, or ASO, is the work of making your store listing easy to find and convincing to install. It is not a trick. It is clear writing, good visuals and patient measurement.

1. Title: say what the app is

Your app title has a strict character limit, so every word counts. Put your brand name with a short description of what the app does, using words people actually search for. "Brightway: Home Cleaning Booking" tells people far more than "Brightway".

2. Short description: the first impression

The short description is the line people see before they tap "more". Use it to state the main benefit in plain language. Avoid filler like "best app ever".

3. Full description: written for people first

Google reads your full description to understand what the app is about, so mention your main keywords naturally. But write for humans: short paragraphs, the key features first, and a clear reason to install. Repeating keywords again and again does not help and can hurt.

4. Icon and screenshots: the real decision makers

Most people decide from the icon and the first two or three screenshots. A few tips:

  • Keep the icon simple and recognisable at a small size.
  • Use screenshots to tell a short story: the main benefit first, then supporting features.
  • Add a short caption to each screenshot so the message is clear without zooming in.
  • For games, a short preview video showing real gameplay makes a big difference.

5. Ratings and reviews

Ratings influence both rankings and installs. Ask for a rating at a happy moment, for example after a completed order or a won level, never in the middle of a task. Reply to reviews, especially the critical ones, and fix what they point to.

6. Quality signals

Crashes, slow start-up and uninstalls hurt your visibility. Stability is part of ASO. That is why we monitor crash reports after every release.

7. Localise

If your users speak more than one language, translate your listing. An Arabic listing for users in the Gulf, for example, often performs much better than an English one.

Change one thing at a time, measure it for a few weeks, then keep what works.

Measure and repeat

Google Play Console shows how many people visit your listing and how many install. Store listing experiments let you test a new icon or screenshots against the current ones. Small improvements add up over months.
